Events of the last few weeks have drawn the world’s attention to the Vatican – a city within a city, a country within a country: the crucible of Roman Catholic Christianity.
This geographically miniscule enclave within Europe has had an influence on western culture which far outweighs its physical extent.
Regardless of one’s faith (or lack thereof), a papal election is an important cultural moment, which has long-reaching implications. And it was ever thus! The relationship between art and faith has a long and venerable tradition.
Throughout the long centuries during which the Vatican has been home to the Bishop of Rome, it has evolved and changed, been built and re-built. In this course, we will trace its history via its remarkable art. From the paintings of the Sistine Chapel and the Papal Apartments to the treasures of its museum and library, culminating with the mighty St Peter’s Basilica itself, we shall enjoy the Vatican in all its glory.
